Phosphate in water

Together with carbon and nitrogen, phosphate is a key nutrient for living organisms. Indeed, phosphate groups are part of the backbone of nucleic acids. Besides, phosphorous is an essential element in the formation of phospholipids, a major component of all cell membranes. Even in low concentrations, the presence of phosphate in feedwater is sufficient to trigger bacterial growth and biofilm formation (biofouling) in water treatment systems. Therefore, the presence of phosphate in feedwater, through biofouling, leads to a number of well-known operational issues during the process of water treatment.

Another negative effect of phosphate in water is eutrophication of surface water. This problem is caused by the discharge of phosphate-rich water from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP’s). Eutrophication can cause the excessive growth of algae and can deprive surface waters from oxygen, causing the death of water fauna and flora. To prevent eutrophication, WWTP’s must meet stringent phosphate discharge limits.

Phosphate removal from water

To prevent bacterial growth and biofilm formation during water treatment, it is important to deprive bacteria from possible nutrients. By reducing phosphate levels to below 1-2 ppb, bacterial growth is inhibited. However, state-of-the-art technologies (e.g. chemical precipitation, and adsorption) are not able to reach these sufficiently low levels of phosphate.
